  1. The Republican “brand” is in trouble. Permanently tarnished. They can say anything they want, but people have seen too much duplicity to ever trust the Republican party again.

    – If it talks about smaller government, people will think about the biggest entitlement program in over 40 years (Medicare Part D).

    – If it talks about fiscal responsibility people will think about the massive deficits the Republicans have piled up in the past 30 years (with only period of relative fiscal restraint since 1980 being a few years under Clinton).

    – If it talks about security people will think about 9/11.

    – If it talks about limited overseas involvement people will think about Iraq.

    – If it talks about “government out of your lives”, people will think about Teri Schiavo and limitless, warrantless wiretapping of Americans and intercepting all American emails and phonecalls regardless of who from.

    – If it talks about social issues, people will think about Sen. Larry Craig and Cong. Mark Foley of Florida.

Smart fiscally conservative real Reagan Republicans would be better off to jump ship and start a new 3d party with a different name and run under the banner of “real change.” Leave the Republican Party label to the social conservatives / evangelical nutjobs. And tell them HELL NO when they come knocking at the new door.

Remember, it was the Southern Conservative Democrats that basically ripped the Democratic party apart in the 50s and 60s, and forced it to completely re-define itself after essentially 25 years in the wilderness (1970 to 1995).

Smart former-Republicans are already looking for the exit.

But, both “brands” are in trouble since neither are listening to the people. Just like President Bush’s approval ratings, the Democratic Congress has record low ratings, too.
