State Rep Annie Kuether, (D, Topeka), is a friend of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and is known as a strong environmentalist in the Kansas legislature. Why is she investing in “Big Oil”?
From “Governor’s circle of friends likely to have input,” Kansas City Star, Jan 14, 2003:
Annie Kuether: This Topeka Democrat was elected to the Kansas House in 1996, two years after Sebelius left to run for Kansas insurance commissioner. But the two have become close friends and political allies. Kuether, active in Topeka civic affairs, has garnered a reputation in the statehouse as a strong environmentalist .
Kuether was endorsed by the Sierra Club in 2006.
She has used solar panels on her home for years. From the Hutchinson News:
House lawmaker Annie Kuether, D-Topeka, likes her home’s solar panels so much she’ s planning to push a bill to help out Kansans who install them.
In the 2008 legislature, Kuether was a strong opponent of the Holcomb coal plant and wanted Sebelius’ appointee Bremby to regulate carbon dioxide in Kansas (Hays Daily News, March 4, 2008):
House Democratic negotiator, Rep. Annie Kuether of Topeka, refused to sign off on the measure, saying she couldn’t accept removal of Bremby’s power to regulate greenhouse gas.
Legislators file “Statements of Substantial Interest” (SSI) reports each year. Annie Kuether filed her SSI on April 30. Oddly, for years (at least since 2002) pro-solar power, anti-coal, environmentalist Kuether has reported her investments in “Big Oil” companies, Exxon Mobile and Enron:
. . .
How can a Democratic State Legislator attempt to regulate everyone’s lives with their use of greenhouse gases, but then invests in “Big Oil” companies to make money? How is that consistent?
Earlier this year the Meadowlark reported Kuether didn’t worry about her “carbon footprint” from flying across the country on the State of Kansas Executive aircraft with Gov. Sebelius to watch a basketball game in person with at least some support of taxpayers.
Why do we tolerate legislators that preach “do as I say” but then don’t “walk the walk”? If carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases are such a problem, why is State Rep Kuether making money from “Big Oil” investments that result in greenhouse gases?
Kuether shows little respect for Kansas taxpayers. The Kansas Taxpayer network gives Kuether a lifetime rating of 34.8 when a score of 75 or more is needed to be a “taxpayer friend.”
