Campaign finance reports from candidates and political action committees (PACs) were due in the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission Office on Monday.
A number of candidate and PAC reports are missing and “failure to file” letters have been sent to them.
But, enforcement of Kansas ethics laws seems fairly lax, and it’s not clear there’s much of a consequence for a late report or “errors and omissions” on the reports.
For example, State Rep candidate Aunesty Janssen’s (D, Olathe) report is late, again. Lack of penalties in previous failures to file haven’t meant much to her. The failure to enforce rules, especially on repeat offenders, is unfair to those that are obeying the rules.
In addition to those that failed to file reports, NONE of the mostly out-of-state PACs that file “verified statements” are listed anywhere online.

Will any of these candidates or PACs learn anything from the consequences of failing to file a report on time? Why is the Ethics Commission being unfair to those that file reports on time by being so lax to those ignoring the rules?
