The Hays Daily News is reporting that Don Hineman, one of the organizers and the first chair of the Kansas Alliance for Education (KAE) group, won the primary election in State Rep District 118 in Western Kansas after the official canvassing of votes.
Most don’t know much about the KAE group and the number of connections this group has with left-leaning political groups in Kansas.
After additional votes were canvassed Monday, Virginia Beamer, R-Oakley, apparently was defeated by challenger Don Hineman, R-Dighton, in the primary election to represent District 118 in the Kansas House of Representatives.
Before votes were canvassed, Beamer had a five-vote lead of 1,853 to 1,848. After the canvass, she quickly called for a recount.
When 42 provisional ballots from counties within the 118th district were tallied, however, Hineman tallied 1,881 votes, with Beamer at 1,862.
With no Democratic opposition in the November general election, Hineman will almost certainly be elected in November.
Here is the summary of a Meadowlark article from Nov 2007 about Hineman and his KAE connection: Why did KNEA/NEA channel $130,000 to the Kansas Alliance for Education PAC in 2006?:
In the 2005-2006 election cycle, a new group, Kansas Alliance for Education (KAE), formed to oppose all conservative candidates for the Kansas Board of Education, and had a dramatic impact on those races. … While KAE’s initial focus was the Kansas Board of Education, KAE formed a coalition with a number of left-leaning groups to promote political change in Kansas. These affiliated groups included:
- MAINstream Coalition and their MAIN*PAC
- Kansas National Education Association (KNEA)
- Kansas Families United for Public Education (KFUPE)
- Kansas Traditional Republican Majority (KTRM)
- Kansans for Lifesaving Cures
- Educating All Children in Kansas PAC (E-PAC)
- Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice
- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG-Flint Hills branch)
- Kansas Equality Coalition
- True Blue Women
The political left will have a new voice in the Kansas legislature with Don Hineman.
