Bill Lacy, Director of the Dole Institute of Politics, started his talk at the American Majority “Liberty Gala” in Lawrence last night with a light moment describing a web site about President Barack Obama’s teleprompter — the Teleprompter of the United State of America (TOTUS).
See the video below.
Lacy then gave his talk, “Did you ever see a dream walking? Lessons for conservatives from Reagan, Dole and Buckley.”
Other comments from Bill Lacy’s talk:
Where are we today as a conservative movement?
Conservatism isn’t dead, and we’re not going to allow it to die. We’re going to make it come back. … A lot of the problems that we have are largely self-inflicted. … We had big government conservatism …
Highlighted three individuals who had a tremendous effect on his life
- Ronald Regan
- Bob Dole
- William F. Buckley
Where do we go from here?
It’s going to take all of us working together. It’s going to require us to stick to our conservative principles, and to do a better job in applying them to today’s problems. It’s going to require us working on uniting ourselves rather than dividing ourselves. And it’s also going to require us to remember the lessons taught not only by the founders, but by the three individuals I talked about tonight. These lessons to me are directly relevant to where we as conservatives as individuals who believe in limited government and freedom want our country to go.
Other speakers at the Liberty Gala included:
Elizabeth Patton, Field Director
We endeavor to train and equip the next generation of liberty-minded candidates, activists, and community leaders. We believe that the steps this country takes should be ones that reflect the steadfast principles of our founding fathers, which should include limited government, free markets and individual freedom.
Shari Weber, Executive Director
… American Majority is a non-partisan, non-profit, educational institute, whose mission is to equip and train candidates for public office and empower community leaders committed to advancing freedom and liberty. We believe that national change begins at the state and local level. And to the end, we provide tools and resources to candidates and activists who desire to make a difference.
Dennis Wilson, Chair of the Kansas Board
Dennis introduced table sponsors and staff.
A big part of our plan is the people we hire, and I believe we have the right staff in Kansas.
Beka Romm, Field Director
Beka Romm had introduced President Bush, Sr. when he was in town recently, and had worked for Bill Lacy at the Dole Institute, so she was given the honor of introducing keynote speaker, Bill Lacy.
… I found my way to the Dole Institute, where a kind man wanted to know my name. And that began a three period in which I had the privilege to work with and to know that man, Bill Lacy. Bill Lacy’s career in politics began in his youth, reading the works of William F. Buckley and writing columns for his high school newspaper. …
Beka described Bill’s work for Young Americans for Freedom, George H. Bush’s presidential campaign, Senator Fred Thompson’s senatorial campaign, two tours of duty in the Ronald Regan White House, and Senator Bob Dole.
