Pottawatomie County held one of the first Kansas Tea Parties as about 80 to 85 met on the steps of the Court House in Westmoreland from 10 AM till about noon today.
Westmoreland only has a population of about 600 but Pott. County has almost 20,000 residents. Population centers in Pott. County include Wamego, St. Marys, Onga, St. George, and part of Manhattan.
The following is an account of the event from John D’Aloia, St. Marys:
“I do believe that the Pott County Tea Party this morning was a success. To everyone who reads this and was present, thank you for attending.”
“Everyone seemed satisfied with the turnout. I counted 75, then 80 – another person counted 90 a bit after I counted. All ages were represented, from toddlers to us old toddlers. Lots of veterans were present less than happy with the direction the country was going.”
“There were not that many signs. We did have several ‘Do Not Tread on Me’ flags of various types.”
“Jud Jones was the organizer. The invocation was givn by Paster Tony Mattia.”
“Speakers included: Jud, Kris Kobach, Richard Carlson, Vern Osborne representing Jerry Moran, Somer Grasser representing Lynn Jenkins, County Registrar of Deeds Betty Abitz, and Elizabeth Patton American Majority-Kansas.”
“Jud opened the microphone to any citizen who had something to say – several people took him up on the offer, talking about mortgaging the future, illegal immigration, too big government, and shutting down the Fed Reserve.”
“Jud had ordered 50 copies of the Constitution, pocket sized, from CATO – I gave them out – they went like hotcakes – am sure I could have found homes for at least 25 more copies. People also snatched up the elected representative contact sheet.”
“A partial answer to the question ‘what next’ was that citizens have to hold elected officials’ feet to the fire by letting the officials know exactly what they believe about the direction the country is taking and that any action officials take to further the descent into the socialist maelstrom has to be severely admonished. A battle cry may be ‘2010.’”
“A KMAN report was present, interviewing, and Mark Portell, owner/editor/chief reporter Wamego Times was taking pictures, making notes.”
“The entire show lasted about 90 minutes – and the grounds were clean when we left.”
