The Kansas Meadowlark

January 2004 Report

With Governor Graves no longer a player in Kansas politics, and with memories of Senator Nancy Kassebaum and Congresswoman Jan Meyers fading, what will the GOP Club do to retain its control of power in Johnson County?  Does JCRE really want to "help" education, or is education just an issue that Steve Cloud and the GOP Club will use just to retain its power?

See political notes about contributors at the bottom of the page.

Notes:
The Kansas City Star $1932 refund is from the expenditure of $54,407 by JCRE in July 2002 ($28,873) and Oct 2002 ($25,534).  Why wouldn't the Star think their profit form this is newsworthy as a conflict of interest?
Joan Battey contributed $150 to Shane Jones and is a member of GOP Club of JoCo.
Liberal Eliot Berkley (misspelled "Bliot" above) at 5747 Windsor Dr in Fairway is a contributor to Planned Parenthood, Mainstream Coalition, Barbara Allen and David Adkins.
Joan and Bert Berkley couldn't be better liberals.  Octogenarian Bert is an executive at Tension Envelope (home of many liberals) and is a Republican for Moore both in 2000 and 2002. Joan as a "homemaker" and "community volunteer" is active as a Mainstream Coalition Board member.  Joan or Bert have contributed to Howard Dean, Kathleen Sebelius, Dennis Moore, David Adkins, Barbara Allen, and Mainstream Coalition.  Joan is a NARAL supporter and a member of the JoCo League of Women Voters.
Clay Blair has been on the Kansas Board of Regents and is chair of the JoCo infrastructure committee (26 Apr 2002, Sun).  Clay donated to KFUPE via the Clay Blair Family Foundation.
Liberal Dick Bond and his wife Suzanne gave $1000 + $1000.  Former Senator Dick Bond is possibly the ring leader along with Steve Cloud of JoCo and KS GOP politics.
Kay Callison contributes to Mainstream Coalition and David Adkins.
Cloud Family Contributions:  $1000 + $1000 + $2000 = $4000
Liberal Steve Cloud is the head of GOP Club, JCRE PAC, and RNC National Committeeman and gave $1000.  With his wife Barabara Cloud, Steve gave another $2000.  Steve's octogenarian parents, Bonnie and Forrest Cloud, gave another $1000.
Banker Ben Craig is the chairman/former president of Metcalf South Bank.  Craig was one of the earliest contributors to JCRE in 2001.  Ben Craig is the former president of Metcalf Bank.  He is a member of the Elephant Club and the JCCC Foundation.  He contributes to liberal candidates including Barbara Allen, John Vratil, David Adkins and Shane Jones.  He supports Frank Denning for Sheriff in 2004.
Laura Cray was on State Senator David Adkin's wife's YouthFriends Board in 2000.
Committee to Elect Kent E. Crippin gave $1000.  As a former County Commission, Crippin is in Dick Bond's camp.  Crippin was endorsed by Mainstream Coalition in 2002.

Both Marge and Bill Franklin are on the Mainstream Coalition advisory board, with Marge serving on the Executive Committee.  Bill Franklin is on the Advisory Board of Steve Cloud's GOP Club.  Bill and Marge contribute to liberal candidates, including David Adkins, Barbara Allen, Shane Jones, and Adam Taff.  In a 9/4/2003 Sun article Franklin complained about Mainstream:

According to former Johnson County Commissioner Bill Franklin of Prairie Village, however, there is a feeling among a number of his fellow moderate Republicans that the coalition is becoming too much of a liberal, Democratic machine.

"I felt personally that both (Taff and Moore) should have gotten the endorsement of MAINstream," Franklin said.

Charlie Horner, an attorney with Blackwell Sanders, along with his wife Mary Kay, contributed to Greg  Musil, David Adkins and Barbara Allen.
Howard Ellis, a Republican for Moore who signed a fund raising letter for Dennis Moore, contributed $2000 to Kathleen Sebelius.
Terrie Huntington was endorsed by Mainstream Coalition in 2002.
Lynn and Ann Kindred have previous contributed to liberal State Senator Barbara Allen.
Former State Senator Audrey Langworth and husband Asher C contribute to numerous liberal candidates, including Barbara Allen, John Vratil, Jim Yonally and Shane Jones.  Picked by Sebelius as part of here "BEST" team.  GOP Club Advisory Board; Endorsed Taff '02;

Can't stick with GOP here
Topeka Capital Journal, 11/1/2002
We have been lifetime supporters of Republican candidates for governor in Kansas, but not this year.   ...
TIM EMERT, Independence
AUDREY LANGWORTHY, Prairie Village

Attorney Rusty Leffel has also contributed to liberal candidates:  Barabara Allen, John Vratil and Shane Jones.
Octogenarian Shirley Rose, is Steve Rose's mom and has served on the Mainstream Coalition Advisory Board.
Steve Rose, Sun Publications Chair, and wife Carol donated $1000 to JCRE. BUT, the real story with Steve Rose is the HUGE amount of money (~$500,000 reported in an IRS 990) that was connected to mysterious Missouri non-profit, Bistate Arts and Sports group.  This group had some connection to Rose's Kansas Bistate Renewal Committee, that had an address at Crown Center in KCMO.  This Missouri non-profit sent $39,500 to the Greater KC Chamber PAC in 2002, which in the same reporting period sent $20,00 to Steve Cloud's JoCo Republicans for Education PAC.
Dick Shull has also contributed to David Adkins and Adam Taff.
Charles Thompson doesn't seem to be a registered voter in JoCo but gave $500 to Taff for Congress 2004 from the same address as that given in this PAC report by Suzanne Thompson in Mission Hills.
