IRS stonewalls investigation of Kansas non-profits active in politics in 2006

IRS In 2006 two Kansas non-profits spent about $450,000 to knock off certain members of the Kansas House and the Kansas Attorney General, and succeeded in several of the contests.

To investigate these and other Kansas non-profits, in mid-April 2008 the Meadowlark requested a DVD from the IRS of all IRS 990s for all Kansas non-profits for the last three years. The IRS cashed the check for the required payment on April 17 and then spent three months developing amnesia about the request. Yesterday the IRS said they had not received payment. (more…)

Did Gov. Kathleen Sebelius violate Kansas ethics laws by donating auction items and not reporting them? No, not if they were personal donations.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius [Updated] Gov. Sebelius’ reception for Dr. George Tiller at the Governor’s mansion while Tiller was under criminal investigation has been in the news for the past several days. News reports today focused on a late reimbursement to the State of Kansas for the event. Gov. Sebelius did not report auction items she donated to the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus, like the reception, as expenditures by her campaign committee or PAC, so the donations must have been made by her personally. Gov. Sebelius, George Tiller, ProkanDo Trifecta On Monday Bob Novak, in a Townhall.com commentary “A Vice President for Abortion,” mentioned previously unknown information about Sebelius and Tiller:

Sebelius invited Tiller and his staff to a party at the governor’s mansion … in May 2007.

[Editor’s note: While the overall content of Novak’s piece was accurate, he should have worded some statements more carefully. For example, Tiller and his clinic’s $120,000 contributions to the Democratic Governors Association were in 2002-2004 not 2006, but were not discovered until just prior to the 2006 elections. There were no direct ProKanDo connections to Paul Morrison, but ProKanDo acted indirectly through a non-profit with negative “Snoop Dog” mailings to harm Kline and help Morrison in 2006.]

Today Operation Rescue revealed a number of photographs showing Dr. George Tiller and his staff at a reception with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius at Cedar Crest, the governor’s mansion.
